Joseph R. Biden named Amir H. Ali on January 10, 2024, in the White House’s forty-fourth round of judicial nominees, for the United States District Court for the District of Columbia. Congress.gov records the nomination as PN1402, 118th Congress, received February 1, 2024: “Amir H. Ali, of the District of Columbia, to be United States District Judge for the District of Columbia, vice Beryl Alaine Howell, retiring.”

The Federal Judicial Center directory repeats the same sentence: nominated February 1, 2024, to a seat vacated by Beryl Alaine Howell. A nomination is a presidential filing. It is not a Senate vote. It is not a commission.

The White House announcement described Ali as President and Executive Director of the MacArthur Justice Center “since 2021.” The FJC chronology is more granular: executive director 2021–2023; president and executive director 2023–2024. Both are printed. They are not collapsed here.
